1. Understanding Innovation
Invention is the creation of a new idea or technology. Innovation is taking that invention, applying it to a real-world problem, and bringing it to the market successfully.
⇒1.1 The Equation
Innovation = Invention x Commercialization.
If you invent a time machine but leave it in your garage, it is an invention. If you sell tickets to it, it is an innovation.

2. Types of Innovation
⇒2.1 Incremental Innovation
Small, continuous improvements to existing products. Low risk. Example: Gillette adding a 5th blade to a razor.
⇒2.2 Disruptive Innovation
Creates a new market and value network, eventually disrupting an existing market and displacing established firms. Example: Wikipedia destroying encyclopedias.
⇒2.3 Architectural Innovation
Taking existing technology and applying it to a completely different market. Example: Desktop photocopier technology scaled down to create the first laser printers.
⇒2.4 Radical Innovation
A breakthrough that transforms the economy. High risk, rare. Example: The invention of the Internet or the Airplane.

3. Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)
When you use Design Thinking to create a radical innovation, you must legally protect it from being stolen by competitors. This is done through IPR.
⇒3.1 What is IP?
Intangible creations of the human intellect. Just as you can own a physical house (real property), you can own an idea (intellectual property).

4. Patents (Protecting Inventions)
A patent is an exclusive right granted for an invention, which is a product or a process that provides a new way of doing something.
⇒4.1 Key Characteristics
Provides a monopoly for a limited time (usually 20 years).
In exchange for the monopoly, you must publicly disclose exactly how the invention works so society can learn from it.
The invention must be Novel (new), Non-obvious (to an expert), and have Industrial Applicability (useful).
You cannot patent an abstract idea or a mathematical formula. You must patent the physical implementation of it.

5. Trademarks (Protecting Brands)
A trademark is a recognizable sign, design, or expression which identifies products or services of a particular source.
⇒5.1 Key Characteristics
Protects logos (Nike Swoosh), names (Apple), slogans ('Just Do It'), and even sounds (the Netflix intro).
Can last indefinitely, as long as the owner continues to use it in commerce and renews the paperwork.
Prevents consumer confusion (so a competitor cannot sell a phone called the 'i-Phone').

6. Copyrights and Trade Secrets
⇒6.1 Copyrights (Protecting Expression)
Protects original works of authorship (books, music, movies, and software code). It protects the expression of the idea, not the idea itself. Lasts for the life of the author plus 70 years.
⇒6.2 Trade Secrets
A formula, practice, or design that is kept entirely secret. (e.g., The Coca-Cola recipe or the Google Search Algorithm).
If you patent it, it becomes public after 20 years.
If you keep it a Trade Secret, it lasts forever, BUT if someone reverse-engineers it legally, you have no protection.

7. Closed vs Open Innovation
⇒7.1 Closed Innovation
The traditional model. A company hires the smartest people, locks them in an R&D lab, patents everything, and keeps all secrets inside the corporate walls.
⇒7.2 Open Innovation
The modern model (championed by Henry Chesbrough). A company intentionally looks outside its walls for ideas, and licenses its own internal ideas to the outside.
Example: Tesla opening up its electric vehicle patents to the public. Elon Musk realized that accelerating the entire EV industry (Open) was more profitable for Tesla than hoarding the technology (Closed).

8. The Business Model Canvas (BMC)
You have used Design Thinking to create a prototype, and IPR to protect it. Now you must build a business around it. Writing a 50-page business plan is outdated. The BMC is a 1-page visual chart with 9 building blocks.
1. Value Proposition: What specific problem are you solving for the customer?
2. Customer Segments: Who exactly are you solving it for?
3. Channels: How does the product physically get to the customer? (App store, retail, direct mail).
4. Customer Relationships: How do you interact with them? (Automated, personal assistant).

9. The Business Model Canvas (Cont.)
5. Revenue Streams: How do you make money? (Subscription, one-time fee, advertising).
6. Key Resources: What assets do you need? (Servers, patents, specific engineers).
7. Key Activities: What actions must your company take daily? (Software development, marketing).
8. Key Partnerships: Who are your suppliers and allies?
9. Cost Structure: What are the most expensive parts of the business?
The BMC allows a startup team to iterate on their entire business model just as fast as they iterate on their physical prototypes.

10. Value Proposition Design
A drill-down into the two most important blocks of the BMC: the Customer and the Value.
⇒10.1 Customer Profile
Maps out the customer's Jobs (what they are trying to do), Pains (what annoys them), and Gains (what would delight them).
⇒10.2 Value Map
Maps out your Products/Services, your Pain Relievers (how you kill their specific pains), and Gain Creators (how you provide the specific delight).
Product-Market Fit is achieved when the Value Map perfectly aligns with the Customer Profile.

11. Product Pitching: The Elevator Pitch
An elevator pitch is a short description of an idea, product, or company that explains the concept in a way such that any listener can understand it in a short period of time (usually 30-60 seconds).

When presenting to venture capitalists for funding, you use a 10-12 slide Pitch Deck. Guy Kawasaki's 10-slide rule is the industry standard.

13. The Power of Storytelling
Investors do not invest in spreadsheets; they invest in narratives.
⇒13.1 The Hero's Journey
Frame your pitch like a movie. The Hero is your User Persona. The Villain is the Wicked Problem they face. The Guide is your Company. The Magic Sword is your Product. Explain how the Guide hands the Hero the Sword to defeat the Villain.
By starting a pitch with 'Let me tell you about Sarah, a single mother who struggled with X...', you immediately engage the human empathy of the investors.

14. Handling the Q&A (Objection Handling)
The Q&A session after the pitch is often more important than the pitch itself. It tests the team's resilience and depth of knowledge.
⇒14.1 Common Traps
Getting Defensive: When an investor attacks the idea, do not argue. Validate their concern ('That's a great point about the server costs'), and then explain your mitigation strategy.
Faking Answers: If you do not know a metric, never lie. Say 'We are currently testing that assumption in our next iteration, and I will email you the data next week.'

15. Scaling Design Thinking
It is easy for a 5-person startup to use Design Thinking. It is incredibly difficult for a 10,000-person corporation (like IBM or Ford) to adopt it.
⇒15.1 Corporate Antibodies
Large corporations are optimized for efficiency and risk-reduction. Design Thinking requires messiness, ambiguity, and risk. When innovators try to change things, the 'corporate antibodies' (middle management, strict compliance rules) attack and kill the innovation.
⇒15.2 The Solution
To scale, leadership must officially change the KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) to reward learning and failing fast, rather than just rewarding safe, quarterly profits.

16. The Future: AI and Design Thinking
How will Artificial Intelligence impact the human-centered design process?
Empathize: AI can synthesize millions of customer reviews instantly to find pain points, but it cannot read the micro-expressions of a frustrated user in person.
Ideate: Generative AI can produce 10,000 SCAMPER variations in one second, acting as the ultimate brainstorming partner.
Prototype: AI can generate UI code (HTML/CSS) directly from a napkin sketch in real-time.
AI will automate the mechanical tasks, but the core 'Empathy' and 'Problem Framing' will remain strictly human domains.

Design Thinking is not just a subject to pass; it is a fundamental rewiring of the engineering brain.
You have learned to pause before writing code. To step away from the computer and talk to humans. To embrace the terrifying ambiguity of not knowing the answer right away.

18. Course Summary: The Process
Empathize: Shut up and listen to the outliers.
Define: Scope a 'How Might We' question anchored by a psychological insight.
Ideate: Generate 100 crazy ideas, then kill your darlings.
Prototype: Build it out of cardboard in 10 minutes to test your riskiest assumption.
Test: Put it in their hands, watch them fail, and loop back to the beginning.

20. Final Advice
As you move forward into your engineering careers, always remember: Nobody cares about the elegance of your backend architecture if you built the wrong product.
Solve the right problem. Fall in love with the problem, not your solution.
