Calculus and linear algebra introduced here are not isolated exam topics — eigenvalue decomposition returns in machine learning, Taylor series returns in numerical methods, and partial derivatives return in optimisation algorithms. Missing these concepts now means stumbling over them every time they appear in the higher semesters.

C programming is the single most consequential subject in the entire degree. Pointers and memory management in C Sem 1 directly underpin linked lists in Sem 3, virtual memory in OS (Sem 4), and systems programming in the final years. Students who understand how stack and heap behave in C read code faster in every language they learn later.

Engineering Physics builds the intuition behind semiconductor behaviour (needed for Electronics in Sem 2), wave equations (needed in Computer Networks in Sem 5) and quantum models (needed in Cryptography in Sem 7). The connections are invisible in first year but become clear retrospectively.

Technical communication and report-writing skills — often underestimated in Semester 1 — determine how clearly a student can articulate design decisions in project reviews, internship applications and, later, in technical interview rounds where spoken explanation of a solution matters as much as the solution itself.

First-year academic performance sets the CGPA trajectory. Because most universities apply diminishing weightage to backlog clearance grades, marks earned in Semester 1 contribute to the cumulative GPA that appears on every internship and placement application throughout the degree.
